POSITION:
One of the most famous cities in Salento is Gallipoli, the “beautiful city”. Gallipolli’s Greek origins are still quite evident in not only the artifacts found throughout the city, but also in the Griko dialect still spoken by some locals. The seaside town features a charming historical center that is actually set upon a tiny island just a few meters off the mainland. The streets are lined with shops selling various wares, and there plenty of cafes and restaurants to choose from, several of which overlook the sea. Those who wonder off the main streets can find their way into the residential areas of the centro storico, and get a glimpse of what life there has been like for at least the past century. There are countless churches crammed into the tiny, twisting streets, as well as palaces, historical libraries, and even ancient oil presses hidden beneath the city streets.
