Considering the enjoyment and pleasure of our guests, has inspired our intent to create environments throughout the house that capture the essence and aesthetic experience of Taos. Our objective is to convey diverse visual experiences in every space generating a sense of welcome, comfort, and contentment that will enrich their stay. As guests enter different rooms, they will notice an interplay of architectural volume in the variety of ceiling heights, liken to Cubist sculpture. When opening the front door the ceiling height is 6’ 2” and as guests descend down into the sunken living room the ceiling height becomes 9’. In the bedroom, the ceiling height is again 6’2”. The variety of ceiling heights change again when entering the kitchen, the ceiling expands to cathedral proportions rising to 14’ and in the loft the high point is 5’1”. Some guest may not feel comfortable in the low and changing ceiling dimensions, yet, we have had guests who were 6’2’’ and did not mind the low ceiling heights. It all depends on the comfort zone of each individual.
Pueblo Deco is designed for discerning travelers who want to experience a unique adobe interior environment, and who want more than a place to sleep. As one enters the house, guests will see a sunken living room that becomes a spectacular adobe sculptural surround inspired by traditional Pueblo architectural motives that accelerate the creation of an environment that also speaks of the Art Deco period. The overall interior design brings together eclectic mid-century stylistic design that compliments and reflects the adobe sculptural elements. The cascading adobe walls surrounding the fireplace may engage guests to wonder and feel as if inside a kiva or immersed in another scared space. Our intention is not only to create a comfortable house to stay in but design a home that imbues a sense of place.
This design aesthetic is like no other in Taos with intricately carved designs within the adobe fireplace facades. The same designer / artists have created and produced unique sculptural southwestern concave and convex relief designs throughout the country in intimate residential installations, vast public art commissions and extensive highway public works projects.
Originally the house, an early farm house of the area, was built with low ceilings to preserve heat in the winter. In past years it has gone through several renovations, most recently, the installation of double pane windows and interior gypsum plaster among other things. The wood floors have been refinished and a variety of area rugs throughout the house add to the ambience. Both kiva adobe fireplaces have been converted to electric fireplace inserts that simulate flames and project heat. Next to the living room fireplace is a 40” HD TV with Direct TV service and wifi, guests have the opportunity to watch TV simultaneously watching the fireplace.
The unit can accommodate four people. Two can comfortably relax on a new queen size mattress in the bedroom which has been designed as an open space over looking the sunken living room. With a separate fireplace in the bedroom, guests can enjoy the unique relief designs and have the comfort and pleasure of facing the fireplace, turning it on or off while lying in bed. The house is full of light, windows over the bed stream light inside while cascading light fills the bedroom and rest of the house throughout the day.
The loft also has wooden floors and will sleep two people on a new full size mattress. Access to the loft is through a stairwell, the size of a closet, and a staircase that leads to the loft is an adaptation of a ladder. A metal grip at the top of the stairwell is a convenient support for climbing up or down. Basically the loft is for those young at heart that can physically get up and down with ease. The loft with a window streaming natural light has a balcony that overlooks the kitchen. We are not accepting children under the age of nine to sleep in the loft for safety reasons.
