18th Century country house between sea and Etna

Situated on a stretch of coast between Catania and Taormina, proudly surveying its estate from the crest of a hill is Villa Bagolaro, an 18th Century country house in a stunning and perfectly peaceful setting between the sea and Mount Etna. Indoor and outdoor living combine seamlessly due to the bright and welcoming rooms and their communication with the terraces. It would be difficult to ask for a more delightful setting.

The living areas and bedrooms of Villa Bagolaro are all on one floor (the first floor). The villa consists of 4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms with shower, small tub, bidet and toilet, a large living area with fireplace and a double sofa-bed, another living area with a fireplace and a single sofa-bed, a kitchen with wood oven and next to it a dining room with dining table. Outside there is also a terrace with seating, deckchairs, extra toilet (in the laundry room), a shower and a barbecue. There is WiFi!

Because of the presence of 2 fireplaces, the house offers a pleasant stay also during the few cold weeks of the short Sicilian winter. There is a maximum usage of 3 KWH of electricity.

The area: Villa Bagolaro is an ideal starting point to explore Mount Etna and its surroundings. Etna villages such as Trecastagni, Zafferana Etnea and Randazzo are famous for their ancient lava flows, the architecture of their 17th century churches, their delicious local products and the hospitality of their villagers. Situated 700m above the sea, they are a popular destination for city dwellers who want some fresh air in the summer and snow for skiing in the winter. Few people know that Etna is a popular place among skiers in winter. On some beautiful winter days, it is even possible to ski on frozen slopes in the morning while enjoying a magnificent panoramic view of the Mediterranean and then go sunbathe on the beach in the afternoon!

Traumhaft gelegen mit großem Garten
Wir waren eine Woche in der schönen alten Villa. Das Grundstück ist riesig mit tollem Blick auf Ätna und Meer. An der Ausstattung hat uns nichts gefehlt. Leider waren die Orangen noch nicht soweit.

La maison est typique des anciennes demeures Siciliennes et elle est pourvue de vues: sur la mer (au loin à l’Est) et sur l’Etna (plein Ouest), lever et coucher de soleil magnifique . Pour cela le cadre est privilégié. Les regrets se portent plus sur l’environnement : toute la propriété (très grand jardin) est bordée par une pépinière et celle-ci embauche à 6h du matin. Si l’on est pas matinale il faut s’équiper de bouchons d’oreilles. A cela, l’annonce faisait état de 3 salles de bains : il faut bien lire le descriptif… il s’agit en fait -> d’une salle d’eau avec douche et wc, un cabinet de toilette dans une pièce extérieure et enfin une douche extérieure qui est très agréable mais ne remplace pas forcément une vraie salle de bain. Toutefois, nous ne regrettons pas notre séjour. À relever que les propriétaires sont très agréables et avenants.

Villa Bagolaro - A home in paradise
We had a longer stay at Villa Bagolaro as a group of students studying abroad. The Villa and their owners, Paola and Luigi, could provide everything we dreamt of. It is situated in a beautiful environment, 10 min walking distance to the sea, some small and fine shops in the nearby village and a ridiculous amount of fruit trees around. We had the perfect working condition in the house, a good internet connection, a lot of space and Luigi who helped with any issue. In retrospect this house is a real treasure to find and we feel blessed that we could spend our time there. Would recommend 10/10. We will definitely come back if we ever get the chance. Thank you Paola and Luigi for everything!

voorjaarsvakantie
Perfecte vakantie, wat een prachtig landgoed en mooi huis. Het sanitair is wat oud, maar voldeed. De buitendouche was heerlijk! Onze kinderen hebben eindeloos verstoppertje kunnen doen in de enorme tuin. Eigenaar was ontzettend vriendelijk, gastvrij en behulpzaam. Prima plek om veel te zien van deze kant van het eiland: de Etna, Taormina, Savoca, Catania en veel meer.

Très belle maison très bien placée à recommander
Cette maison est magnifique pour les amateurs de belles demeures. Elle est placée au milieu d'un grand parc de citronniers et autres essences. D'un côté on a la vue sur la mer, de l'autre, sur l'Etna. Une plage de galets, où on a la chance de trouver une place en plein mois d'août, se trouve quasiment en face à environ 800 m. Monsieur et Madame Grassi sont très accueillants et sympathiques. Séjour réussi !

Sfeervol landhuis met waanzinnige tuin vol bloemen en fruitbomen
Heel bijzonder om in een 17e eeuws landhuis te verblijven. De eigenaar was fantastisch, heel vriendelijk en behulpzaam. Ze doen er alles aan om je een heerlijke tijd te geven. Het uitzicht op de Etna is samen met het zicht op de zee aan de andere kant heel bijzonder! Verder is de buitendouche een aanrader en kun je lekker tafeltenissen in de schaduw onder de bomen in de droomtuin.

Nous avons passé un très agréable séjour dans cette maison pleine de charmes idéalement placée entre Etna et mer, Taormine, Catane et Syracuse. Plaisir du matin : petit-déjeuner face à l'Etna. Les propriétaires sont adorables, accueillants, disponibles et pleins de bons conseils.

Entspannt im wilden Garten mit Etnablick
Geräumiges Haus vom großen, wilden Garten mit Zitronen- und Mandarinenbäumen umgeben. Sehr freundlicher Vermieter. Man hat viel Platz zu jeder Uhrzeit irgendwo Sonne und Schatten, wenn es das Wetter hergibt. Im Haus ist es eher kühl, was auch an der Bauweise für diese im Sommer sehr heiße Gegend liegt. Für kältere Tage gibt es dafür Elektro-Heizkörper im Haus und zwei Kamine. Großer Kühl- und Gefrierschrank, Gasherd und Elektro-Ofen, moderne Waschmaschine und zweites WC im Anbau. Ein Doppelzimmer und drei Twinzimmer, alle mit Tageslicht und Fensterläden. Wlan funktioniert im Haus und Teilen der Terrasse problemlos. Wir hatten kein Problem mit fremden Hunden, allerdings ist ein Gärtnereibetrieb auf dem Nachbargrundstück. Entsprechend sind jeden Tag ab morgens entfernt Arbeitsgeräusche zu hören, an die man sich aber gewöhnen kann. War nie aufdringlich. Nach hinten raus super Panoramablick auf den Etna, vorne raus Blick aufs Meer. Kleiner Stein-/Kiesstrand um die Ecke (mit Auto in 2 Min.). Wir haben uns sehr wohl gefühlt und haben die Aufenthalt im Haus und in Garten genossen. Es war sehr erholsam und würden es wieder machen. Guter Standort für Ausflüge nach Norden und Süden an der Ostküste.

Our hosts were very welcoming and friendly. The house keeps all the promises of the pictures and it is situated great between the Aetna, Catania and Taormina. The neighbors produce some noise during daytime though.

Une propriété authentique et pleine de charme
La propriété est tout à fait conforme à l'annonce. Une maison pleine de charme dans un environnement magnifique. Plus qu'une location, elle donne rapidement l'impression d'être une "maison de famille". L'accueil par Luigi a été parfait et il s'est montré constamment disponible. La location est très bien située pour découvrir cette partie de la Sicile de Syracuse (1h30 de route) à Taormine en passant bien sûr par l'Etna. Bien que ne se trouvant qu'à un kilomètre de la maison, il vaut mieux prévoir un véhicule pour se rendre sur la plage la plus proche qui est une plage de galets. Nous préférions aller sur les plages de sable de Giardini Naxos à environ 15 minutes. Rien de surprenant, en juillet, il fait très chaud en Sicile et les vieilles pierres de la maison conservent bien la chaleur, les ventilateurs mis à disposition ont été très appréciés. Seul petit reproche, l'allée qui mène du portail d'entrée à la maison est en mauvais état et le pot d'échappement de notre véhicule n'y a pas résisté ! Nous recommandons cette location à ceux qui recherchent l'authenticité plus que le confort moderne.

Helt fantastisk og uovertruffent
Huset og beliggenheden lever til fulde op til forventningerne - excellent! Med Etna i baghaven og havet i forhaven får man en helt særlig oplevelse. Haven er fantastisk og man må plukke de frugter, der er modne. Der er gode møbler både inde og ude, og det er nemt at finde en skyggeplads. Stranden er tæt på, og vandet er dejligt klart! Alt vedr. booking og indkvartering fungerede optimalt!

Au top !
Une grande maison de maître dans un champ de citronniers et d'orangers nous attendait à notre arrivée ! L’immense jardin a été un territoire de jeu idéal pour nos enfants. Notre hôte Luigi a été très accueillant, charmant. La maison est grande et parfaitement adaptée pour un séjour à la Sicilienne pour 10 personnes.

L'authenticité d'une propriété familiale
Plus qu'une simple maison de campagne, la villa Bagolaro laisse l'impression d'un séjour dans un petit palais, typiquement sicilien, au sein d'une belle plantation de citronniers, mandariniers et orangers. Le lieu a gardé tout l'esprit d'antan, certains détails nous ont ravi, le four à bois, les vieilles faïences....La villa est entourée d'une large terrasse où l'on s'installe au gré de l'humeur, de l'ensoleillement, du vent ou pour choisir son panorama ; la vue sur l'Etna est splendide autant que celle sur la mer. Les propriétaires sont gentils et accueillants, pour preuve les feux qui flambaient dans les cheminées pour notre arrivée, et partagent avec générosité l'histoire du lieu et de leur famille. Inoubliable!

Wunderbar gelegenes Feriendomizil mit Meerblick und super Vermieter vor Ort.
Die Villa entspricht sehr genau den Beschreibungen des FeWo-direkt Portals. Positiv überrascht der Großzügigkeit des Anwesens und der Lage. Besitzer-Familie Grassis vor Ort sind äusserst liebenswürdige Gastgeber. Ein traumhafter Oktoberaufenthalt im Süden Europas. Bedenkenlos weiter zu empfehlen.

Villa with splendid views and nostalgic charm
The villa is an old family home and is situated within a lemon orchard. It has fabulous views to Etna and the sea, with a small stony beach, not crowded, in 1 km distance. There is a nostalgic touch on almost everything in the villa, a thing I really enjoyed. The surroundig ground has something of an enchanted garden with many lovely places. The villa is huge, so it could house at least two families for holidays. There is sufficient equipment, though only one bathroom. Our host Mr Grassi was very kind and helpful. He was on the spot if needed. There is one minus for people who like to sleep in and need tranquility because the neighbouring plant nursery is busy in the early morning and is in a hearing distance. I would strongly recommend this place to everyone who wants to inhale the atmosphere of Sicily in a place away from the tourist hustle an bustle, but in a good starting point to explore the northeast of the island including Etna.

Beeindruckendes Haus mit einmaligem Ausblick
Die Villa ist schon etwas Besonderes, vorn das Meer, hinten der Aetna und dazwischen ein wildromantischer Garten. Der Standard ist einfach, dafuer mit Waschmaschine und Tischtennisplatte. Die Vermieter sehr nett und hilfsbereit. Ein Auto ist empfehlenswert. Etwas stoerend fur uns, die benachbarte Gaertnerei, die zwar schoen anzusehen ist aber leider schon um 7 mit der Arbeit beginnt. Am Tag und Nachts ist es aber sehr ruhig.

A house in a citrus grove with a sense of history in
We loved this house. It was exactly as described. A historic and spacious villa that had the atmosphere of a much loved family home surrounded by a large garden full of lemon and orange trees and many flowering plants. If you are looking for high specification bathrooms and kitchens and modern furniture it probably isn't for you but if you love a sense of history along with comfortable beds and sofas, ravishing views of Etna behind and the Ionian sea in front from glorious tiled terraces which surround the house on all sides, it will suit you well. Location is interesting with plenty of places to visit though you will need a car. A stony volcanic beach is close by where swimming is great when not rough, though it's probably not a good beach for small children. The Grassis made us feel very welcome and were very helpful. There is a very busy working nursery next door, full of extraordinary plants; we did not find this a problem though. The villa is perfectly private. The only change we would have made was to have had a little local information provided but as the wifi was excellent we managed fine. All in all a wonderful holiday.

Beautiful and unique
It's a truly beautiful house with a unique atmosphere! It has a large garden with dozens of lemon trees and a terrace which goes all around the house so each morning we would pick some lemons for the day at eat breakfast while looking at Mount Etna (which behaved nicely while we were there but often had a bit of smoke coming out of it). In the evenings we would sit on the other side and look at the sea. It is a great place to relax and to get away from the stressful city life. The house has four bedrooms so it is perfect for up to 8 people. We spend a lot of our time exploring Sicily and from this place it is not a long way to Taormina, Catania, Siracusa, Enna or Noto. But even if one does want to spend most of the time close to home, a car is necessary - even to get to the closest village. Not a problem for us but something one should know. All in all we could not have been happier with the house and we can only recommend it!

+ Gesamteindruck war angenehm. Schlüsselübergabe bei Ankunft und Abreise hat sehr gut geklappt, auch hat uns Luigi (freundlich & hilfsbereit) Tipps bzgl. Restaurants, Einkaufsmöglichkeiten etc. gegeben. Villa & weitläufiger Garten mit Zitronenbäumen, Tischtennistisch, Hängematte -> sehr schön, einladend und entspannend. Matratzen der Betten waren in gutem Zustand und sehr angenehm zu schlafen - es kann zeitweise zu Lärmbelästigung durch Arbeiten und zwei Hunde am Nachbargrundstück (Gärtnerei) kommen.

Fantastisch verblijf.
Wij met onze kinderen hebben genoten van ons verblijf in het landhuis, Mooie locatie met uitzicht op zee en de Etna. Om het huis vele terrassen met zitjes en een schitterende grote tuin. Tafeltennis tafel groot succes en veel gebruikt door de kinderen. Alles is authentiek in het huis. Slaapkamers prima. Eigenaar erg vriendelijk en behulpzaam. Omgeving heel rustig en mooi. Op ongeveer 10 min lopen een bakker en slagertje. Kortom fantastisch!!!

Lovely large old villa in great location.
This lovely big old villa is in a great location and is full of character with its doors/windows on every side of the property and the high ceilings.There's the magnificent views of the dominant, smoking Mount Etna to the rear of the property and views of the sea from the front + the huge gardens with lots of lemon and orange trees surrounding the place. It turned a little chilly at night (Mid-March) but there was a wood burning fire and lots of wood supplied so we made good use of that. The owner,Luigi, was very friendly and helpful and spoke quite good English. We realised we had forgotten our electrical plug adaptors and texted him to ask where we could buy some from as we couldn't find any in the supermarket or shops. He asked how many we needed and said he would bring some over to us(I think he lives about 8 miles away). He duly arrived with 2 adaptors and wouldn't accept payment so we said we'd leave them at the end of our stay, in case someone else had the same issue. Good WiFi too. Excellent drives up Etna, especially the south side. Quite a lot of snow up there but the roads were kept perfectly clear. Also good places to visit was Taormina and Syracusa + a few nice villages around. Good supermarket 5 mins drive away. Also a new cafe had just opened up in the village(Caruba) which did lovely ice cream. Overall a very enjoyable holiday in a lovely place. Recommend.
