La Spezia is the port city of Liguria, and its 19th-century maritime arsenal and the naval Technical Museum with naval models and tools of navigation, testify to the maritime heritage of the city. The San Giorgio Castle, on the hill, hosts an archeological museum with finds from the prehistory of the Middle Ages: The near Museo Civico Amedeo Lia hosts paintings and bronze sculptures. At the western end of the gulf of La Spezia there’s the Palmaria island, which its surface of 1,89 km² is the largest of the three island in the Gulf and the entire Ligurian territory, and hosts the wonderful Grotta Azzurra, called so for the reflection of the water on the walls of the cave.
Portovenere is located a few kilometers away and 45 minutes by car you can reach the beautiful Forte dei Marmi.
