The beauty of Casa de Las Aves is not simply that it is a beautiful gated vacation home, which it certainly is. The real charm is how easily one is drawn to its outdoor living area. Whether your interest lies in dipping your toes in the crystal-clear pool, grilling a delicious lunch, or curling up with a good book, your satisfaction is assured. And what a view: 180 degrees of spectacular Costa Rican splendor with a sunrise beyond description.

Located just forty minutes from the International Airport in San Jose, forty-five minutes from Pacific beaches, and within an hour of National Parks, coffee and chocolate tours, and Poas Volcano, it is the perfect base for an active vacation, with a little sun and sand thrown in just to smooth out the edges.

Casa de Las Aves is furnished with your comfort in mind. The two master suites have luxurious king beds and outrageously comfortable American-style mattresses. Both masters have air conditioning, en-suite baths, and walk-in closets. There is also a bonus room with bunk beds in case your children are vacationing with you.

A lovely casita is situated on the property, just a short stroll from the main house. It has its own kitchen, bath, and laundry and is available to rent as an additional bedroom.
This makes the house and casita the perfect rental for three couples traveling together. The casita's additional charge is $75 per night.

If you love cooking, you will find everything you need in the chef’s kitchen with its granite countertops and luxury stainless appliances. Your gourmet dinners are bound to be a success. Dining can be quick on a stool at the kitchen counter, formal at the six-person indoor dining table, or al fresco on the patio. There is truly something for everyone!

The property is surrounded by incredible views and stunning nature, with many full-grown native trees that tropical birds always visit. Toucans, Montezuma oropendolas, Motmots, Amazon parrots, and more are common at Casa de Las Aves. Colorful flowery bushes attract beautiful butterflies and hummingbirds and can be studied from close by. Casa de Las Aves is a true bird lovers’ gem, where you will wake up in the morning to the sounds of Nature, a great way to start a wonderful new day in paradise.

Inside the community are several nature walkways, which are lovely to walk just from the house straight into nature. You can stroll down to a newly built communal rancho with fantastic canyon views—a super quiet place to relax and unwind. Bring your picnic basket for a wonderful lunch while gazing into infinity. Casa de las Aves has it all right here; there is no need to drive to a National Park.

Our property managers, Klaas and Sandra de Graaf, a multilingual (English-Dutch-Spanish) couple from The Netherlands, are ready to welcome you to Casa de Las Aves and will do everything they can to make your stay a great success. As an additional service to our house guests, they offer a fee-based airport pick-up and drop-off to help you avoid the potential hassles involved in the transitions into and out of your time in Costa Rica (something to consider when you have night-time travel plans, particularly but a nice comfort to have in any event). They also provide car rentals and tours to all corners of the country, including the Poas and Arenal volcanoes, La Paz Waterfall Gardens, a private Catamaran Sailing tour, a visit to an Organic Coffee farm, all kinds of adventurous activities, and tours custom-made to our guests' requests throughout Costa Rica.

Everything is set up to your ease, from grocery service to having your fridge stocked with your favorite groceries upon arrival, a home-cooked meal ready for you on your arrival day, and a professional, relaxing massage at the house. Our house managers are ready to serve.

Casa de Las Aves offers everything to make your Costa Rican adventure a memorable experience. It is a perfect place to be, and it is waiting for you to spend your well-deserved vacation.

Weekly cleaning is included for guests who stay longer than 14 days. Our wonderful housekeeper, Helen, is a jewel.

Rates:
The standard rate is based on two people. Additional guests pay $15 per person per night extra. The casita can be rented together with the main house for $75 per night extra.

Just a Lovely Stay
This property was perfect for us. Although reasonably close to Atenas, it was far enough away to be mostly quiet. Mostly only natural sounds including some very raucous Scarlet Macaws. The home was clean and very comfortable with a well equipped kitchen and a small pool. The property managers were very welcoming and efficient in their communication with us. Hope to be back for a longer period next year.

An escape
We had a really good time during our stay. The location of the property lends itself to be a private escape surrounded by nature. It is a bird lovers paradise as titled. The property is clean and well maintained. The amenities are more than adequate. It met all our expectations based on the description provided.

Amazing Views - literally The House of the Birds
Casa de las Aves is a fabulous property. The views of the mountains are exceptional and the birds, butterflies, iguanas and bugs will keep you occupied the entire time. We were treated to a rare visit by Scarlet Macaws! It’s a short trip into town but it feels like you are in the middle of nowhere - in a good way. Klaas and Sandra, the property managers, were fabulous! They took care of all details, from stocking groceries to arranging transportation. All in all, a fantastic experience.

Perfect piece of paradise!
After navigating heavy traffic, the tranquility of Atenas Birdlovers Paradise was a welcome haven at the end of the days' sightseeing. We spent a few days just relaxing and enjoying the well equipped house, wildlife, flowers and fantasic view. Marco was the perfect host making sure all details of our trip were carried out.

Fantastic vacation!
As always, Sandra, Marco and Klaas did a great job and took an amazing care of our group of 3. If you want stress free vacation, this is a way to do it. House was wonderful, great location in gated community, very private, super clean and cozy, great views of the mountains and forest. House looked smaller on the pictures so we were pleasantly surprised to see how large those bedrooms actually were, large bathrooms. Beautiful garden with flowers and hummingbirds. We discovered a few orange limes that we thought were mandarins (😆). We loved the patio and enjoyed glass of wine during few rainy evenings. Pool was nice. Washer and dryer in the house was a huge plus. Kitchen was very well equipped. We did a few tours to Poas, Waterfall garden, Mangrove Monkeys and ATV ride-- Marco was awesome guide. We had a great time! We highly recommend this wonderful house and managers to anyone!

Peaceful and very comfortable
The house is very comfortable and has gorgeous views. We really enjoyed the porch and pool for morning coffee and a glass of wine in the evening. With the help of my Merlin bird app I was able to hear lots of birds and identify them by sound. Some we could see, others kept themselves hidden. The property managers were very helpful although the directions to the house through Waze did not get us there and we had to meet Sandra in Atenas and follow her to the house. We had requested a pickup from the airport, but the information we were given does not state that they only pick up for evening flights. We were unaware there would be tolls on the road to Atenas, but luckily they take yankee dollars. A heads up to future guests, I am sure, would be appreciated. All in all it was an enjoyable trip.

Wonderful
The house and grounds exceeded our expectations and the birds certainly did not disappoint. We were picked up in San Jose ahead of time and checked in early, which we greatly appreciated. While we were there we had a few problems but they were dealt with immediately, which was all we needed. I only hope that wherever we go next our rental will be half as good.

Our second stay in this house turned out to be even better than the first one. It should be named „casa de las iguanas“: These big lizards are everywhere. Although they are not tamed (thank God!), they even take some banana pieces from your hand! The house was once again perfectly clean, spacious and well equipped, including the kitchen. But the best of all was the contact to the manager team: Marian, Aad and Marco acted as good friends solving any problem that might appear. Bravo! Just one proposal to make a perfect stay even better: A bigger dinner table on the terrace would be a good idea.

Lovely, spacious, airy house with amazing views over the mountains and valley
I visited for a week along with my 23-year-old son. The house was peaceful and inviting. We loved waking up early and sitting out on the enormous tiled terrace, gazing at the landscape. The view changed throughout the day as the light changed, and there was one dramatic sunset when there were some incredible cloud formations. Lots of hummingbirds visited the flowering shrubs that bordered the terrace, so we were able to observe them up close. We spent a lot of time just reading out on the terrace, and taking an occasional cooling dip in the little pool. The house was spacious and comfortable, with high ceilings and lots of sliding doors and windows, all with screens, so we could get a cross breeze, which was nice on hot days. Although the location tended to get a nice breeze most of the time, anyway. The house is in a very non-touristy area (although there are a lot of American ex-pats apparently) which we appreciated -- the nearest town, Atenas, is a sleepy place with some grocery stores, cafes, restaurants and a little park - so it was fun to be able to practice Spanish instead of being addressed automatically in English, which I noticed happened when we went to a touristy beach area for the day. The property managers made things easy - picking us up and dropping us off at the airport - and putting a lot of effort into finding us a 4-wheel drive car to rent, organizing the rental with a local company that even came and picked up the car at the house the night before we left. If you want to see a lot of the famous sites in Costa Rica, you will end up doing a lot of driving, but if you are looking for a peaceful, rejuvenating, low-key vacation, and spending some of your time just relaxing at the house, this is the perfect place to be.

Paradise on Earth
I would have to ditto all of the positive aspects of previous reviews. Without Marco and Sandra our stay would have absorbed much more of our precious week's time in just orienting ourselves. Since it was our first trip to C.R. we had a few things to learn. Driving in this foreign country was a bit intimidating, particularly with the curvy, pothole roads. Lack of sufficient road signs made for a bit of a challenge, too. Next time we will be less intimidated! All in all, we miss the warm hearted people, the beautiful weather, the lovely home, the refreshing swimming pool, the scrumptious fruits, and even "Iggy" the resident iguana who came to visit us every day on the terrace. A memorable vacation indeed!

Atenas vacation home
Very nice home nestled in the hills outside Atenas, the ‘Garden of Eden’ of Costa Rica. Famed for its year-round climate, Atenas is a great base to explore CR, but worth enjoying in its own right. The house has two king-size beds with full BRs, plus a third bedroom with bunk beds off one of the masters. Kitchen was well appointed, and the patio has a small pool with solar heating. The property managers will set up tours, transport, deliver groceries, etc. They were very responsive and helpful, offering advice on restaurants and things to do. Our favorite tour was the El Toledo Coffee Tour, but there are enough things to do to keep you busy for a couple weeks. Costa Ricans are a pleasure, they all seem happy and smiling, especially if you try to speak Spanish (or maybe it’s my accent that made them smile). If you are looking for downsides, there are few. The roads are like something out of Disney’s Jungle Cruise and the birds wake up promptly at 0530. Don’t look for a Starbucks or a McDs on every corner. Tourist prices are a bit higher than I expected - try speaking Spanish and pay in Colones to keep down the prices. Overall, a phenomenal vacation rental if you are game to get just a bit off the beaten path.

Even Better
We stayed in this home back in December of 2019 and had a great experience. This time it was even better with the biggest plus being the addition of the solar pool heater. The temperature of the pool got as high as 94. The home is nicely appointed with furniture and appliances (that work) as well as kitchen wares. Honestly the only thing that really needs attention was the lighting, there were more than a few lights that need new light bulbs. We can't attest the to quality of the AC since we never used it because Atenas has the best climate in the world.

Perfect Basecamp for exploring Costa Rica
We love to explore the places we visit and this home was perfect for us as a basecamp. We enjoyed starting our day with our coffee and the beautiful views of the valley. The hosts set us up with a few grest tours/excursions and were extremely helpful with other recommendations. Upon returning from a long day of ziplining, sailing, hiking, etc, it was great to returm "home" for a swim and a lovely place to relax in. We had everything we needed in the kitchen including fresh fruit and local coffee provided by the hosts. We were so grateful for the accommodation by Marco for our VERY late arrival due to flight delays . The home and hosts far exceeded our expectations!

Peaceful and Magnificent
This is a beautiful house and the mountain views from back patio are breathtaking. The kitchen has everything you need for cooking. Enjoy coffee in the morning on the patio while watching the sun come up and the clouds clear away from mountains. Only negative was potholes in road last mile before getting to location but definitely worth getting through this challenge. We would stay again. Thanks to Marco and Sandra for pickup and drop off at airport. Great service.

Great place to work from home!
This property has amazing views! The internet was fast as they had fiber. The house overall was much bigger in person and the property managers were amazing! They were so nice and during the check in process gave us some local coffee and fresh fruit. I would recommend this place for anyone especially if you need a place to work from home!
