Chioggia and Sottomarina, with its 50 thousand inhabitants, is the sixth city in the Veneto region for the number of inhabitants already capital of salt in the Middle Ages, the second town of the Dogado della Serenissima and currently one of the largest Italian fishing centers, is located at the southern end of the Lagoon of Venice, in a singular landscape and environmental site, which Unesco in 1987 has included in the list of world heritage.
Its territory is crossed by three of the most important rivers in Italy: the Adige, the Brenta and the Bacchiglione and it is the natural terminal of the Padana hydro-fluvial navigation network.
It includes one of the deepest shores of the Adriatic (the beaches of Sottomarina and Isolaverde) and an ancient forest of pines and holm oaks, the Bosco Nordio, bound since 1971 to the Integral Nature Reserve, the last trace of Mediterranean scrub.
Of particular interest is its historic center, an example of an urban plan cited by scholars and writers, for its characteristic shape, the classic "fish thorn", in which the vertical lines of the square and the internal and external channels (North-South) intersect with the horizontal ones of the streets aligned with a regular order (East-West), of an extraordinary functionality compared to the typical fishery.
The particular urban design, the typology of the majestic square and the lively foundations with the typical civil and religious architecture, together with the remarkable historical and artistic heritage, have fully recognized the title of "city of art".
The discovery of the benefits of sea bathing and sun tan is something recent, which dates back to the late nineteenth century and the thirties of the twentieth century. The coast of Sottomarina was immediately characterized in this area mainly by two elements: the presence of healthy air brought by the sea breeze, full of salt and iodine; the possibility to benefit from a unique sand, carried incessantly by the rivers, which over time has formed a beach hundreds of meters wide. His fortune stems from indications that in the central decades of the twentieth century doctors in the hinterland gave their patients, advising the baths in this sea and the sand at this beach.
In recent decades, for the medical and health reasons, the coast has been able to add other reasons of attraction for guests, related to entertainment or tranquility that the stay in these environments can offer, the possibilities of finding spaces for all tastes in a shoreline that altogether it reaches 11 kilometers in length, with the possibility of using the most modern technologies and entertainment facilities but also being attracted by the traditional dunes, with their shape sculpted by the wind and water, the particular vegetation that distinguishes them, or the panorama on the sea that offer the breakwaters on the mouth of the port or the dighette and the paths to the mouth of the Brenta and the Adige.
If the sea and the sand are still those of the past, the reception facilities and the possibilities for recreation have increased considerably and are continually adapting to the changing needs of today's tourists.
