Sun Lion Villa, with its original and inspired architecture, is a house built to maximise the appreciation of the landscape that surrounds it. Viewed from the terrace, a sweeping panorama encompasses the Atlantic Ocean, Table Mountain, Lions Head and the Twelve Apostles. Built on an incline, the deck, swimming pool and garden overlook the coastline and setting sun. In keeping with the style of the rest of the house, the swimming pool has no square edges or corners, and blends into the surrounding shape of the private garden and lawn. A perimeter wall insures both pool and garden are protected from the gazes of neighbours and passers-by, allowing the guest total privacy.

Please be aware there are many steps up to the house (the equivalent of 3 floors to climb) so it may not be suitable for the elderly or infirm.

While the house is a favourite amongst children, please be warned that the terrace has no protective netting, and the swimming pool has no fencing, which should only be an issue if they are infants or young children that cannot swim or need constant supervision. We have often hosted families with children, and luckily, there have been no incidents in the 25 years we have rented the house to holidaymakers, but as per the terms and conditions, you will have to accept responsibility for accidents or mishaps of any kind.

It is extremely rare to find good-sized, detached properties for rent with so few bedrooms, because the average house in Camps Bay has 4 or 5 bedrooms, making it prohibitively expensive for couples or small groups to find the privacy of somewhere they can have the entire property to themselves.

A few words about our philosophy when renting out Sun Lion, as tastes and requirements differ among guests. We always strive that the description, photographs, and the video to accurately reflect the look, atmosphere and style of the house, and set up the correct expectations with our guests to prevent any unexpected surprises.

So please study all the pictures and video closely, and be aware that the house is a fun and original African experience with unique architecture, colour and design.

We like to keep it animal-friendly, and do not decorate it with expensive designer furniture and fittings. Most of our fittings are bespoke and handmade by local craftsmen who have had to build them to follow the unusual shape of the house and fit its curves and unconventional angles.

We support the local indigenous artisan community by buying objects and paintings from local artists to give our home a very down-to-earth African feel. This allows us to keep prices affordable, while catering to guests who prioritise and value the exceptional location, views and architecture above the bland sterility of square-shaped generic and small International hotel spaces that look the same the world over.

Information for golfers: The following nine golf courses are within a half hour drive from Sun Lion Villa: Bellville, Clovelly, Metropolitan, Milnerton, Mowbray, Rondebosch, Royal Cape, Steenberg and Westlake. A further nine clubs are reachable within the hour: Atlantic Beach, Boschenmeer, Erinvale, Pearl Valley, Somerset West, Spier, Stellenbosch and Strand. There are four more golf courses within the Western Cape Province; Arabella, Hermanus, Langebaan and Worcester, but those can only realistically be enjoyed as part of an entire day trip outing.

Some recommended outings: Cape Point Nature Reserve, Table Mountain cable car (only 4 kms away) and the famous Stellenbosch and Paarl wine routes. If you book with us, we will happily provide you with a detailed guide of 101 things to do in and around cape Town with useful tips and contacts.

Beautiful spot, comfortable place, friendly folks
My goodness, what a beautiful spot!!! The house is on a very steep slope and as a result there are seemingly no straight lines in it. We found that charming and so enjoyed the views. It's a short uber ride down to Camps Bay which is where you can get all the provisions you need, Anthony was easy to work with and Clarah who was on-site was helpful and supportive, even doing a quick video call to help us understand the surprisingly complex cooktop. Their flexibility was greatly appreciated.

Great location and view. Needs a little maintenance
This is a nice space with an up-to-date kitchen and a large common area in a safe location, with an amazing view. The property manager is great and quickly addressed any issues we had. There are 52 steps from the street to the front door, so this property is not for those with mobility problems. There are a few items in need of repair: a number of lightbulbs were out, 2 of the 3 lanterns (for use during load-shedding) did not work, a toilet and a showerhead both leaked). We prefer our privacy and did not mention these to the manager. Also, there is no dryer as mentioned in the list of amenities....our clothes dried pretty quickly outside, but it requires some planning and nice weather. We still recommend the villa...it just needs some maintenance.

Camps Bay Vacay
This was a great property, the views were amazing and the location was fabulous. The pool area was beautiful and very relaxing. The neighborhood was safe and quiet. I agree with a former review that one bedroom clearly outshines the other, the "king" bedroom can get a bit stuffy, especially when load shedding cuts power during the night. It also was unfortunate that you have to close all windows and doors at night so no ocean breezes to lull you to sleep. Also, with steep stairs and open railings, the house isn't suited to anyone with mobility issues or young children. Some linens and chairs are showing some wear as well, but for the price in this location, you can't really ask for a better house.

Wir waren in der einmaligen Sun Lion Villa. Zuerst aber mussten wir 70 Stufen erklimmen um das Haus zu erreichen...mit Gepäck eine echte Aufgabe. Die Lage des Hauses ist wirklich einmalig. Ein wunderbaren Blick über das Meer, den Löwenkopf und die zwölf Apostel und die Bergstation vom Tafelberg. Traumhaft! Das Haus und Anwesen ist eher eine Herausforderung. Wer ein modernes, hochwertiges, gut eingerichtetes Haus erwartet, wird enttäuscht. Ein Sammelsurium abgewohnter Möbel hat hier ein Zuhause gefunden. Die beiden Duschbäder sind okay und sauber. Die alten Fensterdichtungen sind lose und das Terrassenfenster springt immer aus der Führung. Die Rollos sind ausgefranst und schäbig. Eine Schande für ein derartiges Haus. Die Küche ist OK, die Bestecke absoluter Billigkram. Das Schlafzimmer mit Meerblick ist nutzbar, aber die Teppiche alt und verschlissen. Insgesamt ist das Haus weder modern noch hochwertig. Klasse ist der Fernseher und WIFI Bandbreite, aber deswegen waren wir nicht gekommen. Der Grill ist ein Witz: Wackelig, schäbig, Brenner durchgerostet, Abdeckhaube am Deckel festgeklebt. Die Terassenstühle und Liegen stark verschlissen, die Sonnenschirme defekter Billigkram. Der Pool Reiniger war defekt. Nachdem ich ihn repariert habe und den Pool grundgereinigt hatte war dies zumindest OK. Wir empfehlen den Sun Lion in dem Zustand absolut nicht. Er muss grundsaniert und auf den aktuellen Standard gehoben werden. Schade, wir hatten uns auf den Urlaub sehr gefreut.

Sensationelle Lage
Die Lage des Hauses ist phantastisch. Wir haben uns sofort wohlgefühlt. Wir hatten das Glück, den Eigentümer des Hauses selber kennenzulernen. So war ihm auch bewusst, dass ein gewisser Renovationsbedarf besteht. Die Küchenausstattung in Bezug auf Küchengeräte ist super, doch haben wir dann selber noch eine Salatschüssel und eine Bratpfanne gesponsort. Wir würden aber sofort wieder das Haus für einen nächsten Aufenthalt in Kapstadt mieten.

Deceiving
Good location with stunning views. The stay should have been the icing on a good vacation. However the premises were only superficially cleaned. We had to wash the sheets, pillow cases and pillow covers in the one room because they were so discolored and smelled. The shower head in one of the showers fell off; the toaster was filthy, the dishwasher filter was greasy and had bits of food still in it. The pool was dirty. The BBQ was dirty . We had to ask for all these to be cleaned. We never did get to use the pool during our stay. What a shame that poor maintenance and bad housekeeping ruined our stay. We almost moved out the evening we arrived. I cannot recommend this rental.

Outstanding respite from COvid
We came to Cape Town to spend a month away from the US during COVID. And Sun Lion Villa was absolutely the perfect place. The house is in a great location and Anthony is so easy to work with. In fact, we extended our stay by a couple of weeks and Anthony was so gracious. The house also has a housekeeper and gardener, Clara and Shadrock, who were incredibly helpful. Being that we are not from South Africa, there were many things we did not know how to do, and they were always there to provide advice and a helping hand. We're sorry we had to leave, but we will be back. Thank you!!

Unschlagbarer schöner Blick auf Lions Head und Camps Bay
Die Sun Lion Villa lässt keine Wünsche offen, was die Lage und vor allem aber auch den Blick auf den Lions Head oder Camps Bay angeht. Wenn man die Wohnung mit 4 Personen belegt, gratulieren wir denen, die das Schlafzimmer (Doppelbett) mit dem freien Blick auf die Bucht gewählt oder gewonnen haben. Den anderen bleibt leider nur ein Blick aus zweiter Reihe übrig. Die Küche ist gut ausgestattet und man kann gut ein schönes Frühstück, Mittag oder Abendessen vorbereiten und auf der Terrasse zu sich nehmen. Wir waren allerdings von dem allgemeinen Zustand der Wohnung enttäuscht. An vielen Stellen und Dingen kann man deutlich einen Renovierungsstau erkennen. Wir haben uns letztendlich damit arrangiert, haben aber doch ein paar Stunden gebraucht, um unsere Enttäuschung zu verarbeiten. Die Dinge, die wir hier ansprechen (Türen, die nicht schließen, wackeliger Grill, instabiler Terrassentisch, „vintage“ Sofa, Teppich und Sonnenliegen am Pool, ...) kann man auf den Fotos nicht erkennen. Die Betreuung vor Ort ist sehr gut. Die Privatsphäre der Gäste ist 100%ig gewährleistet, Dienste die man in Anspruch nehmen möchte werden unkompliziert geleistet. Wir haben zu viert eine traumhafte Woche in Camps Bay und Umgebung verbracht. Die Sun Lion Villa hat uns dafür als „Basisstation“ sehr gut gedient, die wir am frühen Vormittag verlassen und zu der wir am späten Abend zurückgekehrt sind. Dazwischen haben wir alles erkundet, was man in einer Woche so in und um Kapstatd mit einem Mietwagen erkunden kann.

Ideal for Family with two Kids. A large private deck is accessed from the lounge. The deck has wonderful sea, sunset and mountain view and has a retractable awning for shady lunches.. There is a six seater dining table for al fresco eating as well as sun loungers for tanning. There is a weber barbecue on the deck.

The views from the bedroom, balcony, and living room are spectacular. We are a family of 4 and were visiting our daughter studying in CT. This was a perfect setting and the apartment was ideal for Lions Head, Table Mountain, gobsmackingingly beautiful sunset photos, and downtown CT. Anthony made communication seamless. Well stocked kitchen (and balcony grill) enabled us to entertain 10 of my daughter's friends (also studying abroad) who had not had a homecooked meal in 3 months. If returning to CT, will stay here - no question. Thanks.

Sun lion villa is a great place to stay. Our family enjoyed the home & wonderful views. The owner is very helpful with detail packet of info. We also took advantage of the shopping service for groceries when we arrived. A quick uber ride to camps bay beach & downtown.

Family with 2 kids 10 and 6 yrs. First time in S.A, camps bay. Anthony gave fantastic and swift support both planning the trip as handling the on going drought. We are South African's living overseas. This time we brought friends with us and of course I wanted to impress them. Well the views from the house are spectacular, my guests were completely blown away. We ate our breakfasts on the deck every morning, lay at the pool every other day, and then walked down to the main road for dinner if we were not cooking ourselves. The house is well equipped with everything you need, especially if you are cooking yourselves. Great security and helpful staff. It's very easy to get an Uber within a couple of minutes. Also a quick Uber ride to more restaurants in the City. You are very close to Table Mountain Cable car, or hiking routes if you prefer. Our host Anthony was most helpful with details and assistance on any question I put to him. We had a wonderful time.

A picture is worth a thousand words
The view you get from the Sun Lion Villa is worth the five stars. The ocean and Lion's Head is a dramatic view. Table Mountain is right behind you. The villa is comfortable, clean, and well-appointed. Anthony, the host, was responsive and informative. The housekeeper, Clarah, was very nice. The proximity to the main street in Camps Bay was an easy five minute drive. It is in a safe location and we love every minute of our stay.

What a view!
We had a wonderful two week stay in Cape Town. This was a far better option than the hotel on our last trip to Cape Town. The house was very comfortable and is focused around the magnificent view. The grocery store and supplies (Except alcohol) are a five minute Uber write down the hill. We made 41 Victoria St. our local restaurant although the Hussar Grill, just down the hill was really good also. Plentiful Ubers made getting around a snap. Thank you Anthony and your helpers for making our stay so memorable! One suggestion: install a solar heater for the pool - it would have been wonderful to be able to use the pool even though it was late winter in South Africa we still had some warm days.
