GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE NEIGHBORHOOD
Plentzia is a pleasant and cozy coastal town located about 25 kilometers from Bilbao, in a beautiful bay that overlooks the sea and that it shares with neighboring Gorliz.
Founded in 1299, this town still preserves part of its historical legacy. Its picturesque old town, of medieval origin, brilliantly combines popular seafaring architecture with more cultured and palatial buildings. It is worth getting lost in its narrow streets and contemplating authentic jewels such as the Church of Santa María Magdalena, which stands out for its beautiful 16th century tower, or the old town hall built in ashlar masonry and which houses the Plazentia Butrón Museum, where elements are displayed of the history of this coastal town.
Formerly, like many other towns, Plentzia was also surrounded by a wall. Today, the only remaining part of that defensive structure is the Arch of Santiago. The Barri Tower, a tower house of the Butrón lineage, is another building of interest, characterized by the shield carved in stone on its facade.
After visiting some of these points of interest, a pleasant walk along the banks of the estuary, dotted with small boats, will take us to the quiet beach of Plentzia, one of the main attractions of the town. This extensive sandy area with calm waters, very frequented by bathers in summer, has exceptional characteristics for practicing various water sports such as surfing, canoeing, diving or windsurfing. Through its promenade it is possible to reach the neighboring Gorliz.
HOW TO GET AROUND THE AREA
By car there are twenty minutres to the airport, thirty minutes to Bilbao or San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, but you can also take the metro in Plentzia that will take you to the center of Bilbao through Getxo, which is interesting to visit.
A 5 minute walk is the beach, supermarket, shops, bars and canoe and surfboard rental services.
