The Neighborhood:
The house is located in the village of Chivenor in between Barnstaple and Braunton. It is conveniently located for access to the town of Barnstaple with its many amenities as well as and the stunning beaches of Saunton Sands, Croyde and Woolacombe. For more adventures, you could even head up to Ilfracombe, Combe Martin or to Exmoor to walk the beautiful moorland. However, with so many things to do locally, there’s little reason to venture far.
The property is literally 50m from the Tarka Trail. This 180-mile walking and cycling route is a great way for adventurers to investigate the area. The trail runs past great visitor attractions like Crow Point, Valley of the Rocks and Haldon Nature Reserve, and through popular towns that include Bideford, Okehampton, Torrington, Barnstaple and Braunton.
All around the South West, you’ll find expansive beaches that are all particularly breathtaking. Saunton Sands, Croyde and Woolacombe are the closest beaches, and all offer something slightly different. Saunton is backed by beautiful protected sand dunes, has fantastic surfing and an excellent Beachside Grill restaurant with tasty treats. Croyde has some of the best pubs around showcasing live music from local talents as well as a lovely Bistro. Meanwhile, Woolacombe is slightly more built up, with plenty of shops, restaurants, bars and cafes. You can enjoy a game of pitch and putt or walk to the iconic Morte Point, once notoriously used by wreckers but now a National Trust gem. Whether you’re a beginner or a pro, good surf can be enjoyed at all three beaches all year round - you can also book a class too!
The nearby village of Braunton has some good dining options and we would highly recommend trying some of the local seafood delights! You’ll find Squires, The Corner Bistro, Siam Bistro and Meraki Pizza amongst others in the village itself. Whilst Williams Arms, a well-regarded traditional 16th-century pub is a short drive away. There are also convenience food stores, multiple surf shops, cafes, takeaways and pubs.
Getting Around:
Due to the remote nature of Devon, we would recommend bringing a vehicle for your stay. There is private off road parking for one vehicle with free on-street parking available too if needed.
That said, the closest train station to the house is in Barnstaple, which is around 10-minutes drive. So it is still very accessible for cyclists. Plus the property is only 50m from the Tarka trail which is both a beautiful and convenient way to get to Barnstaple or to Braunton and beyond. Regular trains run from here to Exeter St Davids, where you can pick up a direct fast train to Bristol or London Paddington. Local bus routes also be utilised and these run along the coast towards Croyde and Woolacombe every 15 minutes.
